In 1549 Thomas Worthesley sold the Manor to Henry Grey the Duke of Suffolk and father of the ill-fated Lady Jane Grey, who became Queen of England for only nine days in 1553. Carberry Tower Castle and Estate

The Queen Mother’s sister, Lady Margaret Elphinstone, used to live here and consequently King George VI often visited with his family. Princess Mary, daughter of King Henry VIII and future Queen Mary of England spent most of her early life at Moor Hall. She is historically remembered as Bloody Mary, for her religious persecution and murder of those practicing the protestant faith.

It is as beautiful and impressive as you might expect for the former home of Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, the last pretender to the throne of France. The ‘Great Gates’ at the entrance of the house once stood in front of York House in Twickenham, the Duke’s previous home.
